I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. My one year old daughter has very simple tastes. After buying her lots and lots of baby toys, I have come to realize that her favorites aren’t toys at all. So if you are scouring your home, searching for baby-friendly objects, here are five that are 100% Baby J approved:
Baby J loves pillows. She loves to pick them up and carry them. She loves to throw them, and recently, she has begun to practice lowering herself down and sitting on them. But her all-time favorite way to play with pillows is for me or Erik to make a huge pile out of them. We then call out “Pillow Party,” and she throws herself on top. Fifteen minutes of solid entertainment with just a bunch of pillows. Nice!
She also loves straws, so much so that I have to hide the straw from my Starbucks cup, otherwise she will reach out and yank it away. She loves to wave them around and throw them. She also likes it when Erik and I hold the straw and gently blow through it so that it hits her face and hair.
My husband, Erik, stretches every night with a foam roller, and J has discovered that it also makes for a pretty good toy. We play periscope with it, roll things down it like a chute, and have even used it as a megaphone from time to time.
Wool Dryer Balls
Do you know those wool balls that you use in place of dryer sheets? Not only are they awesome because they work so well, but they also make a fantastic baby toy. Every time we unload the dryer, J comes running because she wants to grab the balls. She’ll roll them on the floor or try to play “catch” with dad, and they are soft enough that I don’t worry about them being thrown in the house.
An Old Wallet and Business Cards
This is the unparalleled toy for her. One night I noticed that Baby J kept grabbing for Erik’s wallet and pulling all of his cards out. So I decided to make her a wallet of her own. I took one of my old Hobo clutches and filled it with business cards I had collected from various craft fairs. I am not exaggerating when I say that this wallet and bunch of business cards has provided HOURS of entertainment for our little one. She loves to pull them out, put them back in, and hand them out to people. She is only one, but we say that she is clearly a strong business woman! Not to mention that people think it’s so cute for a baby to be passing out business cards that they often give her one of theirs. So much so that we have never run out of cards, and now she can contact some pretty important people!
So there you have it! My one-year-old daughter’s five favorite toys, and none of them cost us extra money. Now I want to hear from you! What are some of your child’s favorite “toys”?
