Are you ready to take DIY, all-natural mouthwashes for a spin? I don’t know about you, but when I was growing up, I avoided mouthwash like the plague. Not because I didn’t want my mouth to feel fresh or have my breath smell good. I avoided it because mouthwash just burned so much! Little did I know that I was doing the right thing… listening to my body and its natural aversion to harsh chemicals. (Did you know that some scientists now think that the alcohol in mouthwash is linked to oral cancer? Yikes and more yikes!) That’s why I am so, so excited knowing that gross, burning mouthwashes are a thing of the past! Now, instead of having to buy a chemical-laden commercial version, I can make my own with simple, natural ingredients. It’ll be just as effective too, minus the burn.
That’s why I am so, so excited knowing that gross, burning mouthwashes are a thing of the past! Now, instead of having to buy a chemical-laden commercial version, I can make my own with simple, natural ingredients right in my own home. And they’ll be just as effective too, minus the burn.
Oh, and I did I mention that all of these are way cheaper than store-bought? Hooray for staying natural and saving money!
So if you are excited like me to make your own mouthwash, here are five really great recipes that you need to check out:
Essential Oil Mouthwash
This recipe uses peppermint and tea tree essential oils to naturally disinfect the mouth. Plus, it contains magnesium drops which help to strengthen the teeth’s enamel.
From Hello Glow.
Whitening Mouthwash
Do you know those whitening mouthwashes that became popular a couple of years ago? It seemed like every company decided to begin making them all at the same time. Well, this mouthwash does the exact same thing thanks to the power of hydrogen peroxide.
From Pop Sugar.
Homemade Cinnamon Mouthwash
If a minty, fresh feeling is not your thing, and you prefer the spice of cinnamon instead, have no fear. We’ve got you covered. This recipe is also made from real food ingredients and gets its antibacterial abilities from manuka honey. I love manuka honey, so definitely give this one a try!
From Everyday Roots.
Easy Homemade Mouthwash
Just like whitening mouthwash above, this one uses aloe vera juice. (Please note that it’s the juice, not the gel.) Aloe vera has been known to help swollen gums and inflammation. A couple of years ago, I had a periodontal pocket, and I really wish I’d had this recipe at the time. So if you’re having gum problems, this is the DIY mouthwash recipe for you.
From Live Simply.
Kid’s Mouthwash
Don’t forget about the kiddos! This one is guaranteed to have a taste that your kids love (or anyone for that matter). Yum… oranges!
From OilPoweredMom.
And now, just a couple of words of advice. A lot of the above recipes are rocking really beautiful bottles. You can certainly buy a pretty bottle to put your mouthwash in. This type bottle is my personal favorite, but please know, though, that if you are making mouthwash with hydrogen peroxide then you really need to steer clear from this type of bottle. Hydrogen peroxide is light sensitive (which is why its always in a brown bottle at the drugstore), and it is much better off stored in an amber bottle

A Word About Curated Posts
The above is a curated post. Some people call them round-ups, but I like the phrase “curated post” a lot better because I have spent hours putting each of these lists together. I have been a Pinterest junkie for years, and I am always looking for the newest or best or most interesting DIY project out there. Finding these items, testing them, and then using them on a daily basis is so much fun AND, I have discovered, helps save me money.
