8 Baby Products You Need to Quit Buying & Start Making

Have you ever noticed that babies require a lot of stuff?  Well, actually, I personally believe that babies don’t really need 50% of the stuff you see in stores, but manufacturers sure want you to believe that they do.  They need “this” and “this” and oh, don’t forget “that”!   All this gear really adds up, and you can end up spending an arm and a leg on baby personal care products alone.  That’s why it is so exciting to discover that you really don’t have to buy ANY of those things.  You can just make them yourself instead and save a ton of money!  Hooray!  So check out eight baby products you need to quit buying and start making today:

DIY Homemade Kids’ Sleepy-Time Body Wash

Our daughter is crazy for bubble baths and showers, and as much as I love for her to be happy, I get incredibly nervous over store-bought varieties. Our skin is our largest organ and easily absorbs what we put on it. That’s why I love this all-natural version. It’s lavender scented because lavender helps promote feelings of sleep.

From Live Simply.

Homemade Soothing Baby Oil

As much as our daughter loves bubble baths, she loves baby oil even more. From the moment her vernix had been worn away, we started daily baby massage, and now that she is older, she likes to apply baby oil to herself. But no way am I going to let her use something with petroleum-based mineral oil in it! That’s why we love this all-natural recipe.

Kid Friendly Creamsicle Toothpaste

I loved this article! Babies are so expensive, and it is awesome to know that I can make virtually every baby care product myself and save a ton of money!

The moment your baby’s first teeth erupt, you are supposed to begin brushing. I’ve mentioned other DIY kid’s toothpaste recipes on the blog before, but I couldn’t go without mentioning this one too.  It tastes just like creamsicles!

From The Pistachio Project.

Homemade & Reusable Baby Wipes

Baby wipes are incredibly expensive, especially if you discover that your husband is using 3-4 wipes at every diaper change, including pee pees, (cough) my husband (cough). That’s what makes this reusable version so awesome. They feature a special type of paper towel that can be washed 120 times before needing to be discarded. The cost? $8.99! Say what?!?!

From Today in Dietzville.

Washcloth Puppets

So no, this isn’t a baby care product, and yes, it requires sewing skills, but seriously, now cute are these wash mitts? Everyone needs one of these in their life even if they don’t have a baby!

From Martha Stewart.

DIY Natural Baby Bum Cream

If you are battling diaper rash, look no further than this cream. Not only will it soothe and protect, but the arrowroot powder and bentonite clay will wick away moisture, preventing future rashes.  How great is that?

From A Blossoming Life.

Homemade Baby Bottom Spray

Remember me mentioning my husband’s baby wipe addiction?  Do you know what helped break his overuse and kept our daughter’s tushie feeling fresh?  Baby bottom spray!  Simply use it on a wipe or spray it directly on your baby’s bottom, and it both soothes and freshens!

From Growing Up Herbal.

Homemade Calming Baby Powder

No list of DIY baby products would be complete with baby powder. But, please be aware of the health risks associated with using it. The American Academy of Pediatrics points out that baby powder can cause, at worst, serious lung damage for babies if they inhale the particles and, at best, breathing difficulties for infants. As the mom of a 16-month-old, I can say that we have never, not once used it on my daughter, and she’s been perfectly fine.

Of course, you can still make some all-natural baby powder and use it to remove the sand from your feet (just keep it away from your kids and use it sparingly). If you only go to the beach a couple of times a year, you’ll probably be okay.

From Naturally Mindful.

A Word About Curated Posts

The above is a curated post. Some people call them round-ups, but I like the phrase “curated post” a lot better because I have spent hours putting each of these lists together. I have been a Pinterest junkie for years, and I am always looking for the newest or best or most interesting DIY project out there. Finding these items, testing them, and then using them on a daily basis is so much fun AND, I have discovered, helps save me money.
