Important Notice: The blog post has been updated again, June 2018. It also now includes eight charts!
I love essential oils! LOVE them! I discovered their power firsthand when I used them during my 44-hour labor and delivery, and ever since then, I have been pretty obsessed. Many people know this, so one of the most frequently asked questions I get from friends and blog readers alike is, “How do I use essential oils?” It always seems as if people start off with one or two oils (usually peppermint and lavender). They diffuse them around their homes, but after that, they become stuck and don’t know what else to use essential oils for. Well, the below charts will change all of that. Save them and reference them often, and before you know it, you will become an essential oil expert.

Here is a long list of essential oils, and along with each is an explanation of what it is good for. Need emotional balance? Use myrrh. Want clear, healthy skin? Use geranium. You get the idea! From Best Essential Oils.
What is a Carrier Oil?
Some essential oils can be applied directly to the skin. But others should only be applied if they are first suspended in a carrier oil. But there are so many carrier oils to choose from, and its hard to know which oil is best for what! This chart changes all of that. Plus, it clearly lists those oils that you absolutely want to use a carrier with. Or, you can just be super paranoid like me and always use a carrier oil. From Best Essential Oils.
Safe Essential Oils for Children
While most essential oils are safe for adults (there are exceptions if you are pregnant), not all oils are safe for kids. That’s what makes this chart super handy. From Essential Oil Blogging.
How to Dilute Essential Oils
Okay, so now that you know all about essential oils and carrier oils, what about their dilutions? In other words, how do you know the right ratio between an essential oil and the carrier? This chart spells it out. From Stephanie Blue.
Essential Oil Dilution Ratio for Kids
Just as the list of oils kids can use differs from adults, so do the dilution amounts. If you are making rollerballs for your children to use, refer to this chart so that the get the ratios correct. From Kids Activities Blog.
Essential Oil Blends
Okay, so we’ve talked about essential oils and carrier oils. Now, let’s talk about essential oil blends. Two of the most popular essential oil companies out there are doTerra and Young Living. Both offer essential oil blends and many of them are surprisingly similar to each other. Do you own doTerra’s Serenity and wonder if you should also buy Young Living’s Peace and Calming? This chart compares all of the blends between the two companies and Eden’s Garden. NOTE: This chart was updated June 2018!

How to Use Essential Oils Topically
Now that you have your rollerballs all set, where do you apply your essential oils? This chart has eighteen different suggestions for you. From Hello Glow.
Essential Oil Safety
Here is even more safety information for you to review as you begin to use essential oils. The bottom line is to always proceed with caution. This is not because essential oils are “dangerous.” Rather, it’s because they are so effective that you must be cautious. Anytime you are using a new oil, always dilute it first. Try a small patch test of skin before rolling it all over your body or whipping it up into a body wash. Make sense? From Oil Powered Mom. Last but not least, these charts mainly dealt with how to apply essential oils to your skin. You can also use them in millions of different products from personal care items to cleaning products to fragrances. Make sure you check out all of the DIY posts on the blog for even more ideas on how to use your essential oils. You can see a list of links down below. So there you go! A Word About Curated Posts
The above is a curated post. Some people call them round-ups, but I like the phrase “curated post” a lot better because I have spent hours putting each of these lists together. Finding these items, testing them, and then using them on a daily basis is so much fun AND, I have discovered, helps save me money. Michelle, you are totally welcome! I love helping others!
They truly are a godsend for me. They work & I absolutely love it that they are natural & chemical free…
Might be a weird question but, why do you put young living oils in the picture but advertise Doterra? What is the difference?
Hi Michelle! Not a weird question at all. I did not make the charts featured in this post; they were created by different people. (You can see the creator listed under each chart.) So the charts mention both doTerra, Young Living, and other essential oil companies. I used Young Living bottles when I made my Pinterest pin as I own both Young Living and doTerra oils. In fact, I used to also sell Young Living, but then I switched to doTerra. I think it just gets down to personal preference. For example, do you prefer things that are American-made or products that help create jobs in developing countries? Or another example: do you prefer having full control of your oils (from the seed to the bottling) or do you prefer knowing that the plants were grown in indigenous areas? I hope this was helpful! Thanks for your question!
I am new to the oil community and sometimes have no idea where to begin. All of this information is so helpful and I will be using it a lot! But I was curious to know any of this information obtains to using an oil diffuser as well? Thank you again for putting all this fun info together!!
Hi, Nicole! The most important thing is for you to read up on your particular diffuser and find out how big of an area it covers. For most medium sized diffusers, I would recommend 5-6 drops of oil. Over time, you’ll also discover if you are particularly sensitive to certain oils. For example, I can tolerate more lavender or blue tansy oil in my diffuser than I can tolerate patchouli or cypress oils. Why, I don’t exactly know, but I have figured this out about myself. I hope that is helpful!
Can I print the charts up?
Thank you for the well informed post. You answered most of my essential oil questions and it is nice to have all the info you need in one place!
